Project Details

  • Project Lead: Kim Wolfe, Research & Development Specialist – Ag Resources, Manitoba Agriculture

  • Collaborators: Syngenta Canada

  • Years: 2017

  • Project Status: Complete

  • Funding & In-Kind Support: Syngenta Canada, Growing Forward II

  • Location: Brookdale Farm

  • Scope: Case Study

  • Keywords: Habitat Biodiversity

Approach

Establish pollinator habitat at Brookdale Farm using two different pollinator seed mixes (Syngenta’s Operation Pollinator mix and a native plant mix).

Key Findings

  • Pollinator habitat can be established using seed blends of different mixes.

  • Native seed mixes may have a higher diversity of flower types and colours which should attract and provide food for many species of pollinators. However, it may take years to establish.

  • The Operation Pollinator mix has fewer floral resources but was easy to establish and grew within a couple of weeks.

  • Choose a pollinator mix based on the amount of time and effort you are willing to expend on establishment.
