Grassland Grazers

The content of the workshop focuses on four key areas, which work together to explain what grasslands are, why they are important in Canada and why for Manitobans in particular. Each topic area will be discussed by local experts in environmental conservation, such as the Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corporation, Manitoba Forage & Grassland Association, Ducks Unlimited Canada, the University of Manitoba Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, and Manitoba Beef and Forage Initiatives. The key topic areas are:

  1. Grasslands, the important role of grazer species and their relationship in the broader ecosystem - Dr. Emma Mcgeough, Asst. Professor of Animal Science, Dept. of Animal Science, UM

  2. The role of grasslands towards watershed management - Mr. Duncan Morrison, Executive Director, MB Forage and Grassland Association

  3. The role of grasslands towards biodiversity conservation - Mr. Tim Sopuck, CEO, MB Habitat Heritage Corp.

  4. The overall role of grassland ecosystems towards fostering robust climate resilience - Dr. Doug Cattani, Asst. Professor of Perennial Grain Breeding, Dept. of Plant Science, UM

Each session will be followed by a short break-out discussion, where small groups can debrief on each topic.

The workshop will take place on August 16, 2021 from 1 pm - 3:30 pm via Zoom
