MBFI Job Opening- Farm Technician

Manitoba Beef & Forage Initiatives Inc. (MBFI) is a centre of agricultural innovation engaging in science-

based research and on-farm demonstration to support the beef and forage production sectors. MBFI is

seeking a highly motivated Full-time Farm Technician to lead farm operations and support research and

extension activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Animal husbandry for all classes of cattle including selection, breeding, and calving. Responsible for identification of herd health concerns, and ensuring safe transportation of cattle.

  • Operate, calibrate, conduct safety inspections, and maintain research and farm equipment. Day-to-day operation of farm and research activities include mowing, snowploughing, fencing, remote water supply set up, seeding, weed and pest control, and harvesting for annual and perennial crops.

  • Safety officer at all MBFI sites

Required Qualifications

Experience is defined as working full-time and having a breadth of decision-making for a typical

extensive livestock farm operation.

  • Grade 12 high school diploma, or equivalent.

  • Five (5) years experience in beef cattle and forage production.

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence, work requires travel between farm sites.

  • Mechanical aptitude with experience operating farm tractors, implements, and towing trailers.

  • Strong communication skills in English with a positive attitude and strong work ethic.

  • Ability to work independently and in collaborative team settings.

  • Duties require flexible hours with overtime in peak agricultural seasons.

  • Position involves physical work, heavy lifting, and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word

Desirable Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in agriculture, and eligible as Professional or Technical Agrologist

  • Experience in grassland management

  • Valid agricultural pesticide applicator certification

  • Valid Class 1 or 3 driver’s licence

  • Experience performing artificial insemination

  • Background in mechanics, welding, carpentry, plumbing or electrical.
